DFU or Device Firmware Upgrade mode allows the S5L8900, S5L8720 and S5L8920 to be restored from any state. It resides in the VROM and the S5L8900 variant is vulnerable to the Pwnage 2.0 exploit.

Recovery Mode allows you to install OpeniBoot or do a normal recovery in iTunes.

Entering / Exiting Recovery mode

  1. Turn off your device.
  2. Hold the Home button.
  3. While still holding the Home button, connect your USB Cable. your device will power on.
  4. Release the Home button when you see the connect to iTunes screen.
  5. You're there.
  6. To exit, just reboot normally.

OpeniBoot Installed

  1. Turn off your device. If iOS will not boot, you can try to power off in Android or Hard Reset.
    • To perform a Hard Reset, hold the Home and Power buttons for 10 seconds until the screen becomes black.
  2. Connect your USB Cable and power your device on.
  3. Use the volume or Power button to select iOS then hold the Home button. It will then try to boot into iOS.
  4. Keep holding the Home button.
  5. Release the Home button when you see the connect to iTunes screen.
  6. You're there.
  7. To exit, just reboot normally.

Entering / Exiting DFU

Software cannot be used to reliably enter DFU. Software methods rely on sending a signed WTF file which either calls the "real" DFU mode in bootrom or emulates it. Only ones calling the bootrom DFU is useful for exploiting bootrom (unpatchable) exploits and none exist that work for firmware 2.0 and later. If you are attempting to exploit the DFU, it is advisable to always use the hardware method. If your NOR firmware is corrupted then you have no other choice but to use the hardware method.

How to Enter True Hardware DFU

NOTE: Keep holding the buttons. It will not matter if you are in iOS, Console or iDroid. DFU will kick in as long as the directions below are performed correctly.
  1. While powered on, connect your device to your computer (with iTunes) using the USB Cable.
  2. Hold the Home and Power buttons simultaneously like performing a Hard Reset
  3. Wait for the screen of your device to go black.
  4. Release the Power button, but keep holding the Home' button.
  5. Keep holding Home for 8-10 seconds or until you are alerted by your computer that it has detected a device in DFU.
  6. The screen should remain black at all times. If the Restore Logo is present on the screen, you are in Recovery Mode, not DFU.

Exiting DFU

While in DFU, hold the power and home buttons for 30-60 seconds. When I have tested it, it has varied, so I don't know an exact length of time to hold it. Note that sometimes if you do this, when the device reboots from DFU, it will go into recovery mode for unknown reasons.
